Val Nieman

Valerie Nieman’s storytelling spans centuries and genres, from the rich tapestry of historical fiction to gripping psychological thrillers and evocative poetry. Her debut historical novel, Upon the Corner of the Moon, explores the lives of the young Macbeths and their journey to unite Scotland in the turbulent 11th century. Fans can look forward to the sequel, The Last Highland King, set to release in 2027.
 

Her novel In the Lonely Backwater, winner of the 2022 Sir Walter Raleigh Award, was hailed as “not only a page-turning thriller but also a complex psychological portrait of a young woman dealing with guilt, betrayal, and secrecy.” Another standout, Blood Clay, won the Eric Hoffer Prize in General Fiction, solidifying Valerie’s reputation as a masterful storyteller.
 

In addition to her novels, Valerie has authored a short fiction collection and three poetry books, blending her keen eye for detail with a deep understanding of the human experience. A graduate of West Virginia University and Queens University of Charlotte, she has received prestigious state and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and served as a founding editor of two literary magazines. Now professor emerita of creative writing at NC Agricultural and Technical State University, she continues to inspire the next generation of writers through workshops and mentorship.
